A Mission to make my life more humane (and gluten free) – changing my source of food and cometics

It all started with eggs. Stupid eggs. I was spending what I thought was highway robbery of $3.99 on organic eggs until I realized how the chickens were kept. I wrote a blog about it here. So now I buy pastured eggs and I get even more robbed at $3.99 to $5.99 a carton. I cannot buy them all the time but when they are available, I do. It all started because of this picture. No animal should spend their life like this.

So then I decided I wanted to make my cosmetics gluten free. I went on a mission contacting MAC, Bath and Body Works, Clinique, and Neutrogena trying to find out if they are humane or gluten free or both. I was met with a ton of resistance to say the least and a few of the companies, Clinque included, gave me the worst run around about submitting the list of each item I use by them and they will test it. I did and they never got back to me. I don’t want to use a company that doesn’t have 100% transparency. Now I got a bit MAD!

While I was searching through all this information, my friend Alison told me that she heard a rumor MAC (my favorite makeup company who I supported unflinchingly) was outsourcing their products to China where they test on animals. This shook me a little bit because I never heard this and MAC never admitted to this. MAC is owned by Estee Lauder who admittedly tested on animals with this statement:

“We do not conduct animal testing on our products or ingredients, nor ask others to test on our behalf, except when required by law.”

With more research, MAC had been dropped by PETA, who I find to be a little wacky with some of their statements, but generally a sound company. I felt a little fooled by a company who was doing ads with PETA just a few years ago. I cannot find the original picture but these are just as shocking:

So I went on a mission to find all new cosmetics to use. I found Hugo Naturals for shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair. I switched to Too Faced and Urban Decay cosmetics. There are some exceptions that I cannot switch yet. I have not found an eyeliner that does not aggravate my eyes and have had to keep using MAC for now. I am not throwing out all my cosmetics but I am not replacing them with the same brand either. When they run out, I will replace them with animal friendly products. I will review each of them as I use them.
