Don’t try this: Cheeburger, Cheeburger in White Plains, Try that: Brooklyn’s Famous

I have to say I got excited when I saw the pink sign of Cheebuger, Cheebuger at 84 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains, NY. I have heard many great things about their burgers and their adherence and care with food allergies. Sadly, this was one of my most disappointing restaurant experiences ever and definitely my MOST disappointing cheeseburger experience.

I called ahead of time to make sure they were actually open because this location is not listed on their website yet. They informed me that while they were open, they are not accepting take out orders at the current time. They also let me know that it takes 15 minutes to get your food so be prepared to wait.

Keeping this in mind because I only had 1 hour for lunch at my job, I decided what I wanted ahead of time and came prepared. I was seated immediately when I came in which was a good sign but this is where the good stuff stopped. Servers were running around like chickens with their heads cut off. One of the servers was actually running through the restaurant dangerously between his tables; not a good sign. I was seated and asked if I was familiar with how Cheeburger, Cheeburger worked to which I answered yes.

The concept behind this restaurant is not new. It is the build your own burger theory. You get to pick a different sized burger, from 1 lb. to 5.5 oz. Then you pick the way you want it cooked (you cannot get it done less than medium) and what toppings you want on it. You can make it a platter with a bunch of bonus, etc. You can figure it out.

I ordered the 1/3 lb burger, cooked as little as possible which meant medium; I am a medium rare girl. I was assured that even medium, the burger is nice and juicy so no worries. I explained I did not want a bun just the meat and toppings and then explained that I have a severe gluten/wheat allergy and I cannot have bread. Its a bad sign when your server says, “Oh, the burger isn’t served on bread, its served on a Kaiser roll, don’t worry.” I explained what a wheat allergy was, an allergy to anything with flour in it, and saw the glazed over expression on her face like she could care less. I also ordered a salad with no croutons and she attempted to upsell me a platter. And then a shake. And then other things. ANNOYING. She let me know that my food will take 15 minutes before leaving my table. This 15 minutes thing seems like its because people assume a burger takes 5 minutes to cook.

The four gentlemen seated at the table next to mine got considerably worse service. It took them approximately 15 minutes just to get a server to come to the table. The 15 minutes thing, its a lie. It took 35 minutes to get my burger. Ridiculous.

First my salad came out, which took about 15 minutes. I had taken maybe 2 bites when with my fork in my hand and my cell phone in the other when my server tried to take away my food! She had her hand on the plate and was taking off the table before she asked, “Oh, are you done with that?” Big Time Server Foul.

Second foul, my burger came out at the 35 minute mark. Nothing was said to me about this long wait (the kitchen is backed up, can I get you anything else? Would you like a refill?) What came out was a hockey puck of flavorless meat well done at least and more like a 1/4 lb burger than anything. The meat was like freeze-dried crap, the only thing that redeems it was cheese. The mushrooms tasted like they were bad but they cooked and served them anyways. The salad was OK; the only redeeming feature was the balsamic vinaigrette dressing was pretty good. My server never checked on my once to see if my food was ok or if I needed more seltzer.

When it was time to get the check, my server disappeared and I had to ask other servers for my check. At this time, servers were still flying by me, one of them almost running into me. Each time a server ran by me, the whole floor shifted under my table and everything tipped. It was like the floor was rotting away and they didn’t bother to fix it before it opened. I do not exaggerate, my arm was on the table and I felt it tip to my left.

If the meal experience couldn’t get any worse, when my server finally dropped off my check. She stood over me starring and watching me write the tip. Totally bad server etiquette. I tipped .50 on a $15 bill it was so miserable. Upon seeing this, she grabbed the bill out from under me and stormed off.

Worst dining experience in memorable history. Don’t waste your time or money at this place. I hope this isn’t the standard of service and food this chain delivers.

On the other hand, there is a nice diner within a block, Brooklyn’s Famous, located at 51 Court Street in White Plains that does take out, local delivery, servers a tasty burger and chicken wings as well as salads and sandwiches. Not to mention the quality of service is generally pretty good even during busy lunches.  I highly recommend Brooklyn’s Famous over Cheeburger, Cheeburger.

UPDATE 3/7/2012: In an interesting turn of events, since I have posted this review last year, I have received very R rated comments, which have not been posted, regarding this post. These posts are also very graphic and some threatening. Oddly, the IP address traces them to around the White Plains area where this restaurant is located. I can only assume that it is someone from the area, possibly affiliated with the restaurant. In the interest of an open exchange, I generally post all messages I get as comments, but in this case, due to the extreme nature of some of the messages, I have not posted them.

    I don’t know which restaurant you went to but I was at Cheeburger,Cheeburger on friday with 3 friends, and my experience was amazing. I loved the fun atmosphere.The food was to die for, the best burger I’ve had in like forever. I happen to like rare burgers but choosing btw rare and getting sick I now go medium. My server was adorable, she got my food out in about 20 minutes and was knowledgeable about the menu. She was at my table when I needed her but she didn’t hover. I love the onion rings and I will definitely be back. Everyone at my table ordered different things and liked everything. I can’t believe you even compared CBCB to Brooklyn’s Famous. CBCB is far superior. I plan on being a regular. Next time I’m even getting a shake! I’m curious did you complain to the manager about what happened to you or did you just decide to leave disgruntled and pan the place?

    Today i had my first exprience at cheeburger cheeburger in white plains, The burger was fantastic ,the decor was beautiful,the music was great, the service was excellent. We Know they just opened 2 days ago and were told it was company policy not to do take out for 2 weeks. It is obvoious from your review, you have a friend or friends that work at brooklyn famous which i have eaten at and does not come close to the buger i had today at cheeburger cheeburger, also the waitress came to my table plenty of time as well the manager and the owner. I also found the resturant to be very clean. I will be going back to cheeburger very soon to try somthing else on the menu. I disagree with you review 100%…

    I have been there two times already and my family and I loved it. For a place that just opened up two days ago the service was really good.The wait is reasonable they do explain that everything is FRESH so it does take a little longer.There shakes,Salads,and burgers are very good. You clearly are just saying this because you are trying to promote this other burger place. I am sure once they are settled in more they will be perfect. Its a family oriented burger place and I will be sure to tell everyone about it. I don’t no what you mean about the floors the place is brand new and looked very clean. When you talk about the meat being a “hockey puck” your crazy because it was so good and tender.

    To reply to everyone, I was at the White Plains one. This was at lunch. What times was everyone else there?

    I spoke to the manager, who seemed to busy to deal with it.

    I am quite offended, actually insulted, by Johanna for claiming I have a friend at Brooklyn Famous. I don’t know anyone at either. I work at a university nearby.

    As to Jenna as well, I am insulted that you think I am lying. I only report what happened.

    To everyone, I am only reporting about one experience, especially from the perspective of a person with a serious food allergy, and the experience from that perspective. I am not reviewing merely to review restaurants for fun. I am sure everyone’s experience differs and I welcome hearing other input.

      I went to cheeburger cheeburger on Thursday night about 8:3o with my 17 yr old son and husband. Our total including tax and tip came to $70. Never again! Omg that place is a rip off.

      The burgers were all overcooked, burnt on the bottoms, even my husband’s which was supposed to be medium well, was burnt. The onion rings are thin, greasy, and flavorless. The fries sat in oil way too long were overcooked on the outside and undercooked on the inside. he fries were way over seasoned. If I want salt and pepper on my fries I will add them. The cole slaw was too creamy and somewhat slimey and looked as if it had been sitting around.

      The person who sat us down asked if we were familiar with the place and when we said no she claimed she was very busy but would explain how the place worked. She rushed through and all the while never made eye contact with any of us at the table.

      Our waitress had no idea that the place had iceburg lettuce. She also told me that the shake a soda take home kit was the same price as it was to drink it there which would be $2.69, but on the way out when I wanted to purchase one I was told $6.51. This did not include any seltzer and I was not given a choice of flavors. I was told it came with mango and strawberry syrup.

      The waitstaff did run around and there seemed to be too many doing a bunch of nothing. After eating I went into the restroom only to find 4 workers standing there talking blocking the stalls. After two excuse me requests they moved to the side so I could enter a stall. I opened the door and there was excrement on the seat so I told them and looked at the other stall that too had feces on the seat and blood running down the front of the bowl. I left the bathroom feeling sick that I had eaten in such a disgusting place. I really was looking forward to this place opening because I heard it was family friendly, great food and had reasonable prices. Well, I for one will not be going back.

    I had a totally different experience at Cheeburger Cheeburger White Plains , NY. I was there on Saturday with my friends, eventhough the place was very busy we were quickly seated and serviced by a pleasant, bubbly and very attentive waiter. He explained the menu to us since it happens to be very extensive. We made our choices and he did explain that the food might take 15 minutes since everything is freshly made to order. We were very happy with our food, the burguers were juicy and had great taste, the French fries and shakes were absolutely amazing. Loved the 50’s and 60’s music and decor. Would recommend and advise that all who read this blog visit the restaurant and judge for themselves. I know that I would absolutely go back, LOVED IT!

    I stopped in Sunday for a late lunch. My first visit to a Cheeseburger – Cheesburger. I liked the 50’s theme. I was pleased with the food and service.

    After getting so much opposing feedback, I will definitely believe that what happened to me was an isolated incident and possibly 100% server-specific or possibly the results of an expected mid-day lunch rush.

    I actually just stopped in this place for the first time a few hours ago for lunch. I had a great experience, food came out less than 15 minutes for two burgers and onion rings.

    My service was actually really great, I had this server named Tina who was all smiles and asked me how everything was without me even having to ask her for something. I’m really surprised that your server or the managers didn’t notice that. I saw managers all over the floor shaking hands with customers, it’s hard to believe we went to the same place.

    But I have to say leaving 50 cents are your bill isn’t right either. I understand that you had a bad experience but most people do not know what Celiac is, and she probably just didn’t know how to help you. Her job was just to take orders, bring food, pick up check. I’m sure she doesn’t know how to make bread or what’s even in it. If I were you, I would’ve just told one of the managers about my experience, and hope that they would make up for it. It’s a chain I’m sure they would’ve made it better for you.

    As Celiac goes, I don’t even use that word. I use gluten and wheat allergy and I am always cautious to explain if the server doesn’t seem to understand. It is actually supposed to be restaurant policy to educate servers. I only take offense when I get the cannot be bothered attitude.

    I tipped so little because she gave me attitude when I explained a wheat allergy, tried to take a salad away from me while I was eating fork in hand, didn’t come to refill my drink, didn’t offer a reason why the food took 35 minutes, didn’t ask me how my food was, and stood over my while I wrote the tip watching me write it.

    After I read your blog I spoke to people who have been here before and then they after told me that there were times they had horrible service. Some of them said they had horrible service being with someone who was dressed down and also being there with someone who was black and they realized that these workers were treating them different compared to who they were with. Definite discrimination with these young workers who don’t know any better!

    A good server is to make sure your service is good!!

    But I guess you should try going to Johnny Rockets instead lol, hopefully they’ll be better than this place. Good luck!

    Today me and two of my friends when to the Cheebuger, Cheebuger at 84 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains for lunch it was a terrible experience NEVER again I will go there, only took 45 minutes for the burgers (the most a burger takes is 15 minutes) The Manager was rude and very unprofessional, if you are looking for a terrible experience go to this location because I can guarantee you that you will have the WORST ONE!

    I went to CBCB with my girlfriend on Sunday May 1. The service was very friendly & They were very busy. My GF asked an employee how long they had opened & he said for 2 weeks. They’re in a great spot on Mamaroneck Ave. I don’t think I’d be able to come there during the weekday, as I work on the corner of Main & Broadway, but the weekends yes. The Delirious burger that I ordered (well done) filled me up before I could finish it! The only minus to us was that the fries were overdone. Nonetheless I will return again.

    I do have to agree that Brooklyn Famous is really outstanding. And I don’t know anyone who works there. I just happen to order and visit there very frequently.

    CBCB might get better, but if it doesn’t I dont’ think it will survive with Westchester Burger, Brooklyn Diner, and a 5 guys coming in.

    I was really disappointed after loving CBCB down south.
    I swear sometimes it feels like White plains takes amazing chain restaurants and somehow ruins them.

    They also did a very poor job of laying out the restaurant. It really is not customer friendly.

    Went here the first week it was open. We walked out after waiting an hour to get our burgers, which when they came were wrong. We never even got our fries that we had ordered. The waitstaff had very little training and the kitchen seemed to have no idea what they were doing either. I havent gone back and I’m not sure if anything has changed but once 5 guys comes in, this place wont survive. They had a lot of potential but due to the fact they were completely unprepared, i think this place is in trouble.

    I too can not wait to give 5 Guys a try. I am going to wait until they are open a couple of weeks before I go to let them get in the groove of things. CheeburgerCheeburger has not gotten any better from what I have heard from friends that gave it a second chance. Personally for me the food and staff weren’t the only issues I did not care for the way the place looked. Brooklyn’s Famous has the same theme but has done it with taste.

    Who wrote this??? I bet it was the owners of Brooklyn famous witch doesn’t matter anymore since they closed down. Cheeburger cheeburger is awesome. Brooklyn famous had nothing on them

      Again, I re-post I am not the only person who had a negative experience. I tried each place once and reviewed based on those times. Claim what you will. And I’m sure the owners of Brooklyn famous have been writing a gluten-free dining blog for years and avidly review gluten free products too.
